Goodbye to the Priority Skilled Occupation List (PMSOL)

Cybersecurity and Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil introduced a ministerial direction this week that changes how the Immigration Department prioritise skilled visa applications.

The direction removed 27 job roles – including ICT security specialists – from the Priority Migration Skilled Occupation List (PMSOL).

Job titles removed from the PMSOL related to tech and cyber skills include ICT security specialists, analyst programmers, developer programmers, software engineers and software and applications programmers.  Other jobs removed include chief executives, accountants, engineers, veterinarians and chefs.

Who now gets priority ?

Highest priority for employer-sponsored visas will now go to healthcare or teaching professionals, followed by applications lodged by approved sponsors with accredited status. The next priority is applications for a role in a regional area.

The details are:

  1. Nomination applications in relation to a healthcare or teaching occupation
  2. Nomination applications lodged by an Approved sponsor with Accredited Status
  3. Nomination applications in relation to an occupation to be carried out in a designated regional area
  4. All other nomination applications

The Department has stated that the intention behind this removal is that it  allows the Department to consider applications which were not prioritised under the previous direction, while progressing steady volumes of incoming visa applications. The reduction in the number of priorities includes removing priority for the Global Talent and Business Innovation and Investment Programs. Visa applications for these programs will still be processed efficiently in line with planning levels made under the annual Migration Program. The new priorities apply to all skilled visa nomination and visa applications that are yet to be decided, as well as new applications lodged.

For your convenience we have detailed all occupations that were on the PMSOL.
